Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 35
36
Section 1. This act may be cited as the "Ivonne Rodriguez 37 and Victoria McCullough Horse Protection Act." 38
Section 2. Section 474.203, Florida Statutes, is amended 39 to read: 40
474.203 Exemptions.—This chapter does shall not apply to: 41
(1) Any faculty member practicing only in conjunction with 42 teaching duties at a school or college of veterinary medicine 43 located in this state and accredited by the American Veterinary 44 Medical Association Council on Education. However, this 45 exemption applies shall only apply to such a faculty member who 46 does not hold a valid license issued under this chapter, but who 47 is a graduate of a school or college of veterinary medicine 48 accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association 49 Council on Education or a school or college recognized by the 50 American Veterinary Medical Association Commission for Foreign 51 Veterinary Graduates. The faculty member exemption shall 52 automatically expires expire when such school or college 53 terminates the faculty member from such teaching duties. On 54 December 31 of each year, such school or college shall provide 55 the board with a written list of all faculty who are exempt from 56


this chapter. Such school or college shall also notify the board 57 in writing of any additions or deletions to such list. 58
(2) A person practicing as an intern or resident 59 veterinarian who does not hold a valid license issued under this 60 chapter and who is a graduate in training at a school or college 61 of veterinary medicine located in this state and accredited by 62 the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education 63 or a school or college recognized by the American Veterinary 64 Medical Association Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates. 65 Such intern or resident must be a graduate of a school or 66 college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American 67 Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education. This 68 exemption expires when such intern or resident completes or is 69 terminated from such training. Each school or college at which 70 such intern or resident is in training shall, on July 1 of each 71 year, provide the board with a written list of all such interns 72 or residents designated for this exemption, and the school or 73 college shall also notify the board of any additions or 74 deletions to the list. 75
(3) A student in a school or college of veterinary 76 medicine while in the performance of duties assigned by her or 77 his instructor or when working as a preceptor under the 78 immediate supervision of a licensee, if provided that such 79 preceptorship is required for graduation from an accredited 80 school or college of veterinary medicine. The licensed 81 veterinarian is shall be responsible for all acts performed by a 82 preceptor under her or his supervision. 83
(4) Any doctor of veterinary medicine in the employ of a 84


state agency or the United States Government while actually 85 engaged in the performance of her or his official duties; 86 however, this exemption does shall not apply to such person when 87 the person is not engaged in carrying out her or his official 88 duties or is not working at the installations for which her or 89 his services were engaged. 90
(5)(a) Any person, or the person's regular employee, 91 administering to the ills or injuries of her or his own animals, 92 including, but not limited to, castration, spaying, and 93 dehorning of herd animals, unless title has been transferred or 94 employment provided for the purpose of circumventing this law. 95 This exemption does shall not apply to unlicensed out-of-state 96 veterinarians practicing temporarily in the state. However, only 97 a veterinarian may immunize or treat an animal for diseases that 98 which are communicable to humans and that which are of public 99 health significance. 100
(b) A person hired on a part-time or temporary basis, or 101 as an independent contractor, by an owner to assist with herd 102 management and animal husbandry tasks for herd and flock 103 animals, including castration, dehorning, parasite control, and 104 debeaking, or a person hired on a part-time or temporary basis, 105 or as an independent contractor, by an owner to provide farriery 106 and manual hand floating of teeth on equines. This exemption 107 does not apply to any person who has been convicted of a 108 violation of chapter 828 that relates to animal cruelty or a 109 similar offense in another jurisdiction. 110
(6) State agencies, accredited schools, institutions, 111 foundations, business corporations or associations, physicians 112


licensed to practice medicine and surgery in all its branches, 113 graduate doctors of veterinary medicine, or persons under the 114 direct supervision thereof, which or who conduct experiments and 115 scientific research on animals in the development of 116 pharmaceuticals, biologicals, serums, or methods of treatment, 117 or techniques for the diagnosis or treatment of human ailments, 118 or when engaged in the study and development of methods and 119 techniques directly or indirectly applicable to the problems of 120 the practice of veterinary medicine. 121
(7) Any veterinary aide, nurse, laboratory technician, 122 preceptor, or other employee of a licensed veterinarian who 123 administers medication or who renders auxiliary or supporting 124 assistance under the responsible supervision of a licensed 125 veterinarian, including those tasks identified by rule of the 126 board requiring immediate supervision. However, the licensed 127 veterinarian is shall be responsible for all such acts performed 128 under this subsection by persons under her or his supervision. 129
(8) A veterinarian, licensed by and actively practicing 130 veterinary medicine in another state, who is board certified in 131 a specialty recognized by the board and who responds to a 132 request of a veterinarian licensed in this state to assist with 133 the treatment on a specific case of a specific animal or with 134 the treatment on a specific case of the animals of a single 135 owner, as long as the veterinarian licensed in this state 136 requests the other veterinarian's presence. A veterinarian who 137 practices under this subsection is not eligible to apply for a 138 premises permit under s. 474.215. 139

For the purposes of chapters 465 and 893, persons exempt 141 pursuant to subsection (1), subsection (2), or subsection (4) 142 are deemed to be duly licensed practitioners authorized by the 143 laws of this state to prescribe drugs or medicinal supplies. 144
Section 3. Effective October 1, 2010, section 500.451, 145 Florida Statutes, is amended to read: 146
500.451 Horse meat; offenses sale for human consumption.— 147
(1) It is unlawful for any person to: 148
(a) Sell in the markets of this state horse meat for human 149 consumption unless the horse meat is clearly stamped, marked, 150 and described as horse meat for human consumption. 151
(b) Knowingly transport, distribute, sell, purchase, or 152 possess horsemeat for human consumption that is not clearly 153 stamped, marked, and described as horsemeat for human 154 consumption or horsemeat that is not acquired from a licensed 155 slaughterhouse. 156
(2) A person that violates this section commits is guilty 157 of a felony misdemeanor of the third second degree, punishable 158 as provided in s. 775.082, or s. 775.083, or s. 775.084, except 159 that any person who commits a violation of this section shall be 160 sentenced to a minimum mandatory fine of $3,500 and a minimum 161 mandatory period of incarceration of 1 year. 162
(3) In addition to any penalties provided in subsection 163 (2), any license of any restaurant, store, or other business may 164 be suspended as provided in the applicable licensing law upon 165 conviction of an owner or employee of that business for a 166 violation of this section in connection with that business. 167


Section 4. Subsections (2) and (3) and paragraph (c) of 168 subsection (4) of section 828.073, Florida Statutes, are amended 169 to read: 170
828.073 Animals found in distress; when agent may take 171 charge; hearing; disposition; sale.— 172
(2) Any law enforcement officer or any agent of any county 173 or of any society or association for the prevention of cruelty 174 to animals appointed under the provisions of s. 828.03 may: 175
(a) Lawfully take custody of any animal found neglected or 176 cruelly treated by removing the animal from its present 177 location, or 178
(b) Order the owner of any animal found neglected or 179 cruelly treated to provide certain care to the animal at the 180 owner's expense without removal of the animal from its present 181 location, 182

and shall file a forthwith petition seeking relief under this 184 section in the county court judge of the county in which wherein 185 the animal is found within 10 days after the animal is seized or 186 an order to provide care is issued. The court shall schedule and 187 commence for a hearing on the petition, to be set within 30 days 188 after the petition is filed date of seizure of the animal or 189 issuance of the order to provide care and held not more than 15 190 days after the setting of such date, to determine whether the 191 owner, if known, is able to provide adequately for the animal 192 and is fit to have custody of the animal. The hearing shall be 193 concluded and the court order entered thereon within 60 days 194 after the date the hearing is commenced. The timeframes set 195

forth in this subsection are not jurisdictional. However, if a 196 failure to meet such timeframes is attributable to the officer 197 or agent, the owner is not required to pay the officer or agent 198 for care of the animal during any period of delay caused by the 199 officer or agent. (3) The officer or agent of any county or of any society 205 or association for the prevention of cruelty to animals taking 206 charge of any animal pursuant to the provisions of this section 207 shall have written notice served, at least 3 5 days before prior 208 to the hearing scheduled under set forth in subsection (2), upon 209 the owner of the animal, if he or she is known and is residing 210 in the county where the animal was taken, in conformance with 211 the provisions of chapter 48 relating to service of process. The 212 sheriff of the county shall not charge a fee for service of such 213 notice. If the owner of the animal is known but is residing 214 outside of the county wherein the animal was taken, notice of 215 the hearing shall be by publication in conformance with the 216 provisions of chapter 49. 217
(4) 218
(c) Upon the court's judgment that the owner of the animal 219 is unable or unfit to adequately provide for the animal: 220

a. Order that the animal to be sold by the sheriff at 222 public auction, and shall provide in its order that the current 223

owner shall have no further custody of the animal, and that any 224 animal not bid upon shall be remanded to the custody of the 225 Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane 226 Society, the county, or any agency or person the judge deems 227 appropriate, to be disposed of as the agency or person sees fit; 228 or 229
b.2. The court may Order that the animal be destroyed or 230 remanded directly to the custody of the Society for the 231 Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society, the 232 county, or any agency or person the judge deems appropriate, to 233 be disposed of as the agency or person sees fit, upon the 234 testimony of the agent who took custody of the animal, or upon 235 the testimony of other qualified witnesses, that the animal 236 requires destruction or other disposition for humanitarian 237 reasons or is of no commercial value. 238
2.3. The court, upon proof of costs incurred by the 239 officer or agent or officer, the court may require that the 240 owner pay for the care of the animal while in the custody of the 241 officer or agent or officer. A separate hearing may be held. 242
3.4. The court may order that other animals that are in 243 the custody of the owner and that were not seized by the officer 244 or agent be turned over to the officer or agent, if the court 245 determines that the owner is unable or unfit to adequately 246 provide for the animals. The court may enjoin the owner's 247 further possession or custody of other animals. 248
Section 5. Effective October 1, 2010, section (1) of 249 section 828.125, Florida Statutes, is amended to read: 250

horses or cattle; offenses; penalties.—Any other provisions of 252 this chapter to the contrary notwithstanding: 253
(1) Any person who willfully and unlawfully, by any means 254 whatsoever, kills, maims, mutilates, or causes great bodily harm 255 or permanent breeding disability to any animal of the genus 256 Equus (horse) or any animal of any registered breed or 257 recognized registered hybrid of the genus Equus (horse) or genus 258 Bos (cattle) commits, or any recognized registered hybrid of the 259 specified genera, shall be guilty of a felony of the second 260 degree, punishable as provided by s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 261 775.084, except that any person who commits a violation of this 262 subsection shall be sentenced to a minimum mandatory fine of 263 $3,500 and a minimum mandatory period of incarceration of 1 264 year. 265
Section 6. Section 828.28, Florida Statutes, is created to 266 read: 267
828.28 Local animal licensing ordinances; notices.-- 268
(1) Any county or municipality that has a licensing 269 requirement for dogs must provide notice to dog owners at least 270 45 days prior to any licensure renewal deadline. The notice must 271 contain information describing the licensing requirements and 272 any associated penalties. 273
(2) Counties and municipalities with licensing 274 requirements are encouraged to develop online licensing systems 275 to provide a convenient and cost-effective licensing process.276 Section 7. Except as otherwise expressly provided in this 277 act, act shall take effect July 1, 2010. 278

(2) A person that violates this section commits is guilty 157 of a felony misdemeanor of the third second degree, punishable 158 as provided in s. 775.082, or s. 775.083, or s. 775.084, except 159 that any person who commits a violation of this section shall be 160 sentenced to a minimum mandatory fine of $3,500 and a minimum 161 mandatory period of incarceration of 1 year. 162
(3) In addition to any penalties provided in subsection 163 (2), any license of any restaurant, store, or other business may 164 be suspended as provided in the applicable licensing law upon 165 conviction of an owner or employee of that business for a 166 violation of this section in connection with that business. 167

The court shall schedule and 187 commence for a hearing on the petition, to be set within 30 days 188 after the petition is filed date of seizure of the animal or 189 issuance of the order to provide care and held not more than 15 190 days after the setting of such date, to determine whether the 191 owner, if known, is able to provide adequately for the animal 192 and is fit to have custody of the animal. b.2. The court may Order that the animal be destroyed or 230 remanded directly to the custody of the Society for the 231 Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society, the 232 county, or any agency or person the judge deems appropriate, to 233 be disposed of as the agency or person sees fit, upon the 234 testimony of the agent who took custody of the animal, or upon 235 the testimony of other qualified witnesses, that the animal 236 requires destruction or other disposition for humanitarian 237 reasons or is of no commercial value. 238
2.3. The court, upon proof of costs incurred by the 239 officer or agent or officer, the court may require that the 240 owner pay for the care of the animal while in the custody of the 241 officer or agent or officer. A separate hearing may be held. 242
3.4. The court may order that other animals that are in 243 the custody of the owner and that were not seized by the officer 244 or agent be turned over to the officer or agent, if the court 245 determines that the owner is unable or unfit to adequately 246 provide for the animals. The court may enjoin the owner's 247 further possession or custody of other animals. 248

Section 6. Section 828.28, Florida Statutes, is created to 266 read: 267

(1) Any county or municipality that has a licensing 269 requirement for dogs must provide notice to dog owners at least 270 45 days prior to any licensure renewal deadline. The notice must 271 contain information describing the licensing requirements and 272 any associated penalties. 273
(2) Counties and municipalities with licensing 274 requirements are encouraged to develop online licensing systems 275 to provide a convenient and cost-effective licensing process.276 Section 7. Except as otherwise expressly provided in this 277 act, act shall take effect July 1, 2010. 278

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 35

Section 1. This act may be cited as the "Ivonne Rodriguez 37 and Victoria McCullough Horse Protection Act." 38
Section 2. Section 474.203, Florida Statutes, is amended 39 to read: 40
474.203 Exemptions.—This chapter does shall not apply to: 41
(1) Any faculty member practicing only in conjunction with 42 teaching duties at a school or college of veterinary medicine 43 located in this state and accredited by the American Veterinary 44 Medical Association Council on Education. However, this 45 exemption applies shall only apply to such a faculty member who 46 does not hold a valid license issued under this chapter, but who 47 is a graduate of a school or college of veterinary medicine 48 accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association 49 Council on Education or a school or college recognized by the 50 American Veterinary Medical Association Commission for Foreign 51 Veterinary Graduates. The faculty member exemption shall 52 automatically expires expire when such school or college 53 terminates the faculty member from such teaching duties. On 54 December 31 of each year, such school or college shall provide 55 the board with a written list of all faculty who are exempt from 56


this chapter. Such school or college shall also notify the board 57 in writing of any additions or deletions to such list. 58
(2) A person practicing as an intern or resident 59 veterinarian who does not hold a valid license issued under this 60 chapter and who is a graduate in training at a school or college 61 of veterinary medicine located in this state and accredited by 62 the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education 63 or a school or college recognized by the American Veterinary 64 Medical Association Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates. 65 Such intern or resident must be a graduate of a school or 66 college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American 67 Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education. This 68 exemption expires when such intern or resident completes or is 69 terminated from such training. Each school or college at which 70 such intern or resident is in training shall, on July 1 of each 71 year, provide the board with a written list of all such interns 72 or residents designated for this exemption, and the school or 73 college shall also notify the board of any additions or 74 deletions to the list. 75
(3) A student in a school or college of veterinary 76 medicine while in the performance of duties assigned by her or 77 his instructor or when working as a preceptor under the 78 immediate supervision of a licensee, if provided that such 79 preceptorship is required for graduation from an accredited 80 school or college of veterinary medicine. The licensed 81 veterinarian is shall be responsible for all acts performed by a 82 preceptor under her or his supervision. 83
(4) Any doctor of veterinary medicine in the employ of a 84


state agency or the United States Government while actually 85 engaged in the performance of her or his official duties; 86 however, this exemption does shall not apply to such person when 87 the person is not engaged in carrying out her or his official 88 duties or is not working at the installations for which her or 89 his services were engaged. 90
(5)(a) Any person, or the person's regular employee, 91 administering to the ills or injuries of her or his own animals, 92 including, but not limited to, castration, spaying, and 93 dehorning of herd animals, unless title has been transferred or 94 employment provided for the purpose of circumventing this law. 95 This exemption does shall not apply to unlicensed out-of-state 96 veterinarians practicing temporarily in the state. However, only 97 a veterinarian may immunize or treat an animal for diseases that 98 which are communicable to humans and that which are of public 99 health significance. 100
(b) A person hired on a part-time or temporary basis, or 101 as an independent contractor, by an owner to assist with herd 102 management and animal husbandry tasks for herd and flock 103 animals, including castration, dehorning, parasite control, and 104 debeaking, or a person hired on a part-time or temporary basis, 105 or as an independent contractor, by an owner to provide farriery 106 and manual hand floating of teeth on equines. This exemption 107 does not apply to any person who has been convicted of a 108 violation of chapter 828 that relates to animal cruelty or a 109 similar offense in another jurisdiction. 110
(6) State agencies, accredited schools, institutions, 111 foundations, business corporations or associations, physicians 112


licensed to practice medicine and surgery in all its branches, 113 graduate doctors of veterinary medicine, or persons under the 114 direct supervision thereof, which or who conduct experiments and 115 scientific research on animals in the development of 116 pharmaceuticals, biologicals, serums, or methods of treatment, 117 or techniques for the diagnosis or treatment of human ailments, 118 or when engaged in the study and development of methods and 119 techniques directly or indirectly applicable to the problems of 120 the practice of veterinary medicine. 121
(7) Any veterinary aide, nurse, laboratory technician, 122 preceptor, or other employee of a licensed veterinarian who 123 administers medication or who renders auxiliary or supporting 124 assistance under the responsible supervision of a licensed 125 veterinarian, including those tasks identified by rule of the 126 board requiring immediate supervision. However, the licensed 127 veterinarian is shall be responsible for all such acts performed 128 under this subsection by persons under her or his supervision. 129
(8) A veterinarian, licensed by and actively practicing 130 veterinary medicine in another state, who is board certified in 131 a specialty recognized by the board and who responds to a 132 request of a veterinarian licensed in this state to assist with 133 the treatment on a specific case of a specific animal or with 134 the treatment on a specific case of the animals of a single 135 owner, as long as the veterinarian licensed in this state 136 requests the other veterinarian's presence. A veterinarian who 137 practices under this subsection is not eligible to apply for a 138 premises permit under s. 474.215. 139

For the purposes of chapters 465 and 893, persons exempt 141 pursuant to subsection (1), subsection (2), or subsection (4) 142 are deemed to be duly licensed practitioners authorized by the 143 laws of this state to prescribe drugs or medicinal supplies. 144
Section 3. Effective October 1, 2010, section 500.451, 145 Florida Statutes, is amended to read: 146
500.451 Horse meat; offenses sale for human consumption.— 147
(1) It is unlawful for any person to: 148
(a) Sell in the markets of this state horse meat for human 149 consumption unless the horse meat is clearly stamped, marked, 150 and described as horse meat for human consumption. 151
(b) Knowingly transport, distribute, sell, purchase, or 152 possess horsemeat for human consumption that is not clearly 153 stamped, marked, and described as horsemeat for human 154 consumption or horsemeat that is not acquired from a licensed 155 slaughterhouse. 156
(2) A person that violates this section commits is guilty 157 of a felony misdemeanor of the third second degree, punishable 158 as provided in s. 775.082, or s. 775.083, or s. 775.084, except 159 that any person who commits a violation of this section shall be 160 sentenced to a minimum mandatory fine of $3,500 and a minimum 161 mandatory period of incarceration of 1 year. 162

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office will hold a public auction on Saturday morning to sell four horses seized a few weeks ago.

A judge ordered the animals to be turned over to the sheriff's office after they had been found without adequate food and water on more than one occasion earlier this year. Since being impounded in August, the animals have been on rehabilitative diets because they were all estimated to be at least 150 pounds underweight.

An auction to sell the animals will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the sheriff's Rural Services Livestock Impound facility at 18903 N.W. 67th Blvd. in Lacrosse.

A boom in vacation homes in the last 25 years in this remote place has seen the descendants of colonial Spanish mustangs confined to a 7,500-acre sanctuary on the northern tip of North Carolina's Outer Banks. And now the herd itself may shrink along with its habitat.
A plan backed by the federal government would see the herd reduced from about 115 horses today to no more than 60 in a bid to stop the animals, designated North Carolina's state horse this year, from competing with federally protected birds for increasingly hard-to-come-by resources.

The Fish and Wildlife Service says the plan will reduce harmful behavior by a species it considers a nuisance. But residents who rely on the horses to bring in tourist dollars or who simply cherish the mustangs as a symbol of the country's spirit worry it could bring about the collapse of the herd through hereditary diseases and other complications of a shallow gene pool.

I like the angle of the front of the hoof to match the slope of the pastern. Which can be hard to do with my flat footed Arabians. They were just done last Tuesday & I was checking angles Wednesday night when a few seemed a little off.You stand about 10-12 feet away and compare each hoof to the other and then to their stance in general. It isn't as easy as people may think to be a good farrier as there are three angles/axis to consider while setting the foot. The front hoof wall, the side to side and the front to back, which yes is affected by the front wall and heel wear. On Friday everything looked much better, the horses were more comfortable.A good farrier can minimize hoof and leg defects by how he shaves the hoof. Sarah has a partial club foot and paddles when she runs but he minimizes both very well. Paddling is a very common fault in Paso Finos so they may be working to compensate for that and any what is it called? when the front of the rear hooves clip the back of the fronts as she runs.

My farrier is John Kolody and his wife raises champion Paso Finos, usually stallions. Well, technically she's pinhooking I guess~ she buys a young horse and then trains them. Anyway, John & I talk about it a lot. He was impressed that I go to a lot of the Paso shows in Ocala and noticed the conformation faults of many. The paso hoof is one of the hardest to do because they are standing still as you trim. So you have to correct them for proper conformation and then hope it is also right in movement. So even though hoof angles are a big part of the equation, having someone walk or ride your horse while you observe from the front, back and side will tell you if the hooves are being trimmed right. Oh, I'm usually 20 to 40 feet away while watching them move.

Ford Leads Auto Industry in Safety Awards

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The insurance industry named dozens of new cars and trucks, led by Ford Motor Co. and its Volvo subsidiary, to its annual list of the safest vehicles Tuesday, helped by the increased use of anti-rollover technology. Ford and Volvo had 16 vehicles in the 2009 model year on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's list of the safest new cars, followed byHonda Motor Co. with 13 vehicles. Seventy-two cars, trucks and SUVs received the top safety pick designation for 2009, more than double the number of vehicles in the 2008 model year and three times the number in 2007. "The sheer number of this year's winners indicates that automakers have made huge strides to improve crash protection," said Institute president Adrian Lund. The selected vehicles are the best in protecting people in front, side andrear crash tests based on institute evaluations during the year. The vehicles are required to have electronic stability control, or ESC, toqualify for the award. IIHS said electronic stability control is now standard equipment onvirtually all new SUVs and three-quarters of passenger cars for the 2009 model year. ESC is standard on more than one-third of 2009 pickups. Ford was led by the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan midsize cars with optional ESC; the Ford F-150 pickup, Ford Edge and Ford Flex midsize sport utility vehicles; and the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner small SUVs. The list also included the Mazda Tribute, which has the same underpinnings as the Escapeand Mariner. Ford CEO Alan Mulally argued last week in Washington that the automaker hadmade safety strides when he testified along with other Big Three executives seeking massive government aid. "Every year, we're going to improve the quality, we're going to improve thefuel efficiency, we're going to improve the safety, and we're going to keep improving the productivity so we can offer the consumer the very best value," Mulally told a House committee. Honda and its Acura unit had vehicles in nearly every category, including top-sellers such as the Honda Accord; the Honda Civic 4-door with optional ESC; and the Acura MDX and RDX midsize SUVs; and the Honda Fit with optional ESC. The Fit is the first mini-car to earn the safety award. Volkswagen AG and its Audi brand had nine vehicles on the list, includingthe Volkswagen Jetta and Passat and the Audi A3, A4 and A6. General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. both had eight vehicles on thelist. GM's included the Cadillac CTS and the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook large SUVs. Toyota's top performers were the Toyota Corolla with optional ESC, ToyotaRAV4, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra and Scion xB. Using the awards, consumers can compare vehicles without having to review results from multiple tests. Automakers pay close attention to the institute's findings and frequently note positive ratings in television commercials. The institute has advocated for an early adoption of anti-rollovert echnology such as ESC ahead of a government requirement for the systems bythe 2012 model year. Electronic stability control senses when a driver may lose control and automatically applies brakes to individual wheels to keep the vehicle stable and avoid a rollover. It helps motorists avoid skidding across icy or slickroads or keep control when swerving to avoid an unexpected object in theroad. IIHS said Chrysler LLC was the only major automaker that did not receive a single award. They said Chrysler could have picked up five awards if the head restraints had been improved in the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring,the Sebring convertible and the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country. Chrysler spokesman Cole Quinnell said he could not comment on whether the head restraints might be upgraded in the future. He said Chrysler vehicles are equipped with a variety of safety features and the institute's results"are just one of the sources of information about a vehicle's crash performance." The debate over aid to the Detroit-based automakers is awash with half-truths and misrepresentations that are endlessly repeated by everyone from members of Congress to journalists. Here are six myths about the
companies and their vehicles, and the reality in each case.
Myth No. 1
Nobody buys their vehicles.
Reality
General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC sold 8.5 million vehicles in the United States last year and millions more around the world. GM outsold Toyota by about 1.2 million vehicles in the United States last
year and holds a U.S. lead over Toyota of about 560,000 so far this year. Globally, GM in 2007 remained the world's largest automaker, selling 9,369,524 vehicles worldwide -- about 3,000 more than Toyota.
Ford outsold Honda by about 850,000 and Nissan by more than 1.3 million vehicles in the United States last year.
Chrysler sold more vehicles here than Nissan and Hyundai combined in 2007 and so far this year.
Myth No. 2
They build unreliable junk.
Reality
The creaky, leaky vehicles of the 1980s and '90s are long gone. Consumer Reports recently found that "Ford's reliability is now on par with good Japanese automakers." The independent J.D. Power Initial Quality Study scored Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Mercury, Pontiac and Lincoln brands' overall quality as high or higher than that of Acura, Audi, BMW, Honda, Nissan, Scion, Volkswagen and Volvo.
Power rated the Chevrolet Malibu the highest-quality midsize sedan. Both the Malibu and Ford Fusion scored better than the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
Myth No. 3
They build gas-guzzlers.
Reality
All of the Detroit Three build midsize sedans the Environmental Protection Agency rates at 29-33 miles per gallon on the highway. The most fuel-efficient Chevrolet Malibu gets 33 m.p.g. on the highway, 2 m.p.g. better than the best Honda Accord. The most fuel-efficient Ford Focus has the same highway fuel economy ratings as the most efficient Toyota Corolla. The most fuel-efficient Chevrolet Cobalt has the same city fuel
economy and better highway fuel economy than the most efficient non-hybrid Honda Civic. A recent study by Edmunds.com found that the Chevrolet Aveo subcompact is the least expensive car to buy and operate.
Myth No. 4
They already got a $25-billion bailout.
Reality

Ford Continues to beat Other Automakers on Safety

Ford Motor Company has earned more “Top Safety Pick” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) than any other automaker with a total of 16 to date. Ford surpassed its closest rival Honda this week when four of its 2009 models – Ford Flex, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Milan – achieved “Top Safety Pick” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ford also has more 5-star government crash test ratings than any other automaker.
How They Get Picked
To earn IIHS’s “Top Safety Pick,” vehicles must earn the top “good” ratings in the institute’s high-speed front and side crash tests, and a rear crash test simulation that evaluates seat and head restraints. An added requirement since 2007 is that vehicles also must offer electronic stability control.
Helping Drivers Maintain Control
Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan excelled in each of the institute’s crash tests, and AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control is available for each vehicle. The safety system uses sensors to detect and measure yaw, or side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When AdvanceTrac® senses wheel slip, engine torque is reduced and braking is applied where needed to help the driver keep the car tracking on its intended path. Florida Soldier wins Mustang in Ford Motor Contest

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 3, 2008 – Few things are more American than the Ford Mustang. And fittingly enough, the winner of the “Mustang Stories” online contest is U.S. Army Specialist Kory Chesher, a member of the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division serving in Iraq.
Online voters selected Chesher’s story from the top 25, giving him the grand prize of a new 2010 Ford Mustang GT Coupe and a trip for two to Los Angeles for the reveal of the next generation of the classic American muscle car at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Nov. 19.
“Kory’s story perfectly captures the passion and enthusiasm that Mustang has created for more than 40 years,” said Mustang Brand Manager Fritz Wilke. “We’re pleased to award him his first Mustang and hope it brings him many years of enjoyment. We also want to sincerely thank all the Mustang enthusiasts who submitted their stories and voted at www.the2010mustang.com to make this contest such a great success.” Chesher’s entry was one of several thousand received for the “Mustang Stories” contest. Entries, which were limited to a maximum of 250 words, were submitted from Aug. 27-Oct. 15, with the top 25 stories posted Oct. 18. Online voting ran through Oct. 28.
“I want to thank everyone at Ford and everyone who voted for helping my dream of having my own Mustang come true,” Chesher said via e-mail from Iraq. “I opened up my e-mail and saw the first bold message said, ‘Congratulations: You are a Winner in the Mustang Stories Contest.’ I couldn’t read it fast enough. I’m just overwhelmed.”
Chesher, who lives in Edgwater, Fla., just south of Daytona Beach, hopes to be at the unveiling at Los Angeles. His group is returning to the United States this month.
The 22-year-old Chesher developed his passion for Mustang during a traffic stop with his father while in Louisville, Ky.
“This Mustang was in the left turning lane and I was like, ‘Wow, what kind of car is that?,’ ” Chesher recalled. “My dad said, ‘Oh, that’s a Mustang.’ I was immediately hooked. That must have been sometime in the summer of 1991 or ’92. I must have been about 6 or so.”
Chesher submitted his story with a photo of him standing in front of an Army vehicle called an MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protectant). A super-size Mustang Pony badge gallops proudly on the grille of the truck, which tranports soldiers and equipment across dangerous terrain.
Chesher’s mother, Susan DuMond, says he had been saving money to buy a Mustang when he returned to the United States. “He’s got Mustang blood – he eats, sleeps and breathes Mustang,” DuMond said. “It’s his dream car. Kory was saving as much money as possible to buy a Mustang. Now’s he’s won a Mustang. It doesn’t get better than that.”
DuMond said she received a phone call at work that Chesher won. “I was jumping up and down in the office and running around,” she said. “I’m so happy for Kory. This is just fantastic!”
Chesher’s 242-word essay, “A Life Obsession,” follows:
It started when I was about 6 years old. I was in the truck with my father and we were at a stoplight. Across the road at the other light was this “car.” It drew my attention away from everything else in the world. I asked my dad what it was and he simply said, “Oh, that’s a Mustang.”
I remember it like it was yesterday. I now know that it was a 1968 black Fastback. That was almost 20 years ago. Twenty years of love, addiction, obsession. Twenty years of longing and desire.
Now I’m a solider in the United States Army deployed to Iraq. I spend my spare time tearing through Mustang magazines that my family and total strangers are kindhearted enough to send to me. Every opportunity I get I’m online poring through forums and pictures; studying every little tidbit of knowledge I can get my hands on; meticulously memorizing seemingly insignificant trivia. Names, dates, specs, colors, paint codes, production numbers, costs, anything, everything.
A Mustang of my own wouldn’t quell this life I live – it would supercharge it. The only thing greater than a life loving Mustangs is a life with a Mustang. With a Mustang to call my own I could finally experience the pride and freedom that I’ve only been watching from afar. It will ignite a passion like nothing I have ever experienced. Mustangs are my one true love.

New Ford Hybrid Fusion and Milan will outperform Toyotas!

Fighting the long-held perception that much of the technology in their company's first "full"-hybrid system for the Escape hybrid SUV was bought or licensed from Toyota, executives and engineers at Ford were crystal-clear during this week's media preview of the all-new hybrid architecture for the company's upcoming Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrid sedans: Everything, they said, was designed by Ford in North America.
The new hybrid system is "100 percent Ford technology; 100 percent Ford design, invented right here in North America," said Nancy Gioia, Ford Motor Co.'s director of sustainable mobility technologies and hybrids. She and other engineers say every major component was developed under Ford engineering.
In detailing the key components, engineers said they stressed an interdisciplinary approach that helped optimize all components for maximum system efficiency. The process developed several intriguing new components and advances, they said.

“This is a professional rodeo,” Public Relations Chairman Larry Koblentz said. “Rodeo cowboys get points toward national finals.”
The Ocala rodeo is a sanctioned Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) event. Events include bull riding, steer wrestling, bronco riding, team roping, barrel racing and tie down roping.
One of the high points of the Ocala Shrine Rodeo for members is the special rodeo for the nearly 200 physically challenged children who are sponsored by the Ocala club. These Marion County children are receiving or have received medical care at Shriners Tampa Orthopedic Hospital or the Shriners Burn Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
These children are invited to attend the rodeo, and about 30 are selected to participate in a series of rodeo events appropriate for their special needs. Kids are paired with a rodeo professional and guided through such events as goat riding, roping dummy steers, riding a hand-rocked bull or taking a real horseback ride.
“The kids all get a cowboy hat, bandanna, contestant number, lariat rope and T-shirt,” Koblentz said, adding that each also gets a trophy. “They’re all winners.”
In previous years, this special rodeo took place on Sundays before the regular performance, but members thought the heat would be less severe in late afternoon. This year the event is scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. and is free. Each year, a Rodeo Princess and Rodeo Buckaroo are selected from the young patients and will be introduced at this Thursday event. Last year’s princess was Megan Simons, and the buckaroo was Joshua Logsdon.
Because the rodeo is completely produced by the club, it keeps members working throughout the year, Koblentz explained. From hiring specialty acts to selecting concessions to obtaining sponsors to selling tickets, the club members do it all. They also oversee at least 200 volunteers at each performance.
“When we finish this rodeo, we’re already working on the next one,” he said. “All proceeds from the rodeo go to the Shriners children’s hospitals.”
The club has raised $1.2 million from the rodeos over the years, Koblentz said. He calls the work provided by the 400-member club a “labor of love” because proceeds go to such a worthy cause.
“There is no charge for treatment at any Shriners hospital,” Koblentz said.

FORD AWARDED $10 MILLION ENERGY DEPARTMENT GRANT TO ACCELERATE DEVELOPMENT OF PLUG-IN VEHICLES

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 6 – Ford Motor Company has been awarded a $10 million grant by the U.S. Department of Energy for research, development, and demonstration of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
Ford received the grant for the continued development of a demonstration fleet of 20 PHEVs. The total project cost is $20 million, and the government will fund $10 million, or 50 percent, of the program.

In June, Ford delivered the first flexible fuel capable plug-in hybrid electric SUV to the Department of Energy. The Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid, capable of running on gasoline or E85, is part of a demonstration fleet Ford is developing in a partnership with Southern California Edison, the Electric Power Research Institute, DTE and Johnson Controls/Saft.
Advanced vehicle testing is underway on vehicles in California, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. The company delivered the first gasoline-only Escape PHEV to Southern California Edison in December 2007.
“As a leader in both hybrid and flexible fuel technology, Ford is well positioned to bring the two together in a plug-in vehicle. With plug-in hybrids, we have the potential to significantly change our transportation and energy future,” said Nancy Gioia, director of Ford’s Sustainable Mobility Technologies and Hybrid Vehicle Programs. “Our ultimate goal is to create plug-in vehicles that can be mass produced and meaningfully contribute to our nation's energy security.”
The Ford Escape PHEV is equipped with a 10 kilowatt advanced lithium ion energy battery supplied by Johnson Controls/Saft that stores enough electric energy to drive up to 30 miles at speeds of up to 40 mph. The battery works in tandem with a small four-cylinder engine.
Based on current estimates, the vehicle would emit 60 percent less CO2 than a conventional gasoline powered vehicle. The CO2 reduction would reach 90 percent if cellulosic ethanol is used in place of gasoline.

Ford Quality is Still Job One!

Today, everyone associated with Ford should take pride in the quality of the cars and trucks we build that resulted in the latest headlines on Consumer Reports Annual Car Reliability Survey. Among those headlines: “Ford Reliability Gains on Honda, Toyota,” from Bloomberg News, and “Ford Builds Most Reliable American Cars,” from The Detroit News.
The results from Consumer Reports further validate the quality story we at Ford have been telling for some time. Our efforts to design, build and launch with quality are paying off. As David Champion, director of Consumer Reports Auto Test Center, noted, “This has been a systematic, structural change within Ford.”
That structural change shows in the dedicated work by teams in manufacturing, product development, purchasing, marketing, sales and quality using disciplined, standardized processes to deliver significant quality gains. Despite the challenges of the current automotive climate, our teams have remained focused on the goal, to become the highest quality automotive manufacturer. We are well on our way to achieving that goal.
A total of 44 FLM vehicles / configurations earned average or better reliability ratings compared to 41 FLM vehicles / configurations in last year’s survey.
Some highlights from the Consumer Reports auto issue, which features the Ford Fusion on the cover with the caption, “Ford Fusion, top rating in Reliability.”
· Ford was singled out as on par with the Japanese automakers and the best of the domestics. The magazine writes: “Ford’s three nameplates – Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury – lead the domestic automakers and continue to pull away from the rest of Detroit."
· Almost all Ford products now carry average or better than average reliability ratings. The Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan continue to rank among the most reliable family cars. The freshened Ford Focus sedan rated above average, with the magazine citing a vast improvement. The Ford F-150 2WD versions with V6 and V8 are rated better than average. The 2009 model has not yet been tested.

$2.71 for Gasoline is a Bargain?

Well, I am a little excited that gas is less than $3.00 a gallon...

One of my cars is a hot rod Lincoln (1996 Towncar Executive) and it was costing me $80 a week to fill up and get back and forth to work and visit my horses at the farm. And that was up from $60 a week back when gas was closer to $2.00 a gallon. The extra $20 a week is killing me and when you figure the cost of food and horse feed is going up as well, there is no extra money for anything. I'm sure many of you are feeling the pinch as well.

The crazy thing about horse feed is the additional cost is due to the price of corn and grain which is tied to the government subsidies for Ethanol. My special feed for one of my horses has gone from about $10 a bag 5 years ago to almost $20 a bag now.

What gets me is that it takes about a gallon of gasoline to produce 1.33 gallons of ethanol. Then ethanol MPG is closer to 60% of regular gasoline. The gasoline I was buying at the truck stop was pure gasoline until last month. Now it has that "May contain up to 10 percent Ethanol" sticker and I've noticed a radical drop in gas mileage. My hot rod Lincoln would get up to 25 MPG on the highway and my combined driving computer always showed I was getting around 22 MPG no matter how I drove. So I figured that if I got 10% ethanol that would be 2 gallons of ethanol per tankful and roughly 12 MPG for those 2 gallons or a loss of 16 miles per tankful.

However, I have to drive extremely careful to achieve anywhere close to 20 MPG. If I don't pay attention I get closer to 19.5 MPG.

Now I know Ethanol is supposed to be greener and save the planet for our children but if I have to burn more gas (it looks like about 10% more, doesn't it?) to go the places I have to go, aren't I polluting even more?

And it's not like I'm someone who doesn't care about the environment. I don't do excessive driving. I make sure I stop on the way home to pick up groceries or supplies. 95% or more of my driving is to work and back or to care for my horses.

Which is why I am glad to see gas prices dropping in our area... $2.71 at my regular gas station and as low as $2.67 at some of the other ones along my route. I'm wondering if this is an economic meltdown or pre-election phenomenon or if this is the trend. Will it bring back the SUV or steer us away from better gas mileage vehicles? Which makes me proud to work for Ford Motor Company- we're working on improving gas mileage across the board. In fact, coming almost immediately is the new Escape with a new motor/tranny arrangement that will make it a 30 MPG SUV. And our Focus series is cutting edge American made technology that gets almost 40MPG (depending on how you drive and where) while looking good getting there.

CHICAGO, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Feeding America (formerly named America's Second Harvest) announced today that Ford Motor Company and Newman's Own will continue their longstanding commitment to combating rural hunger by extending their innovative and effective partnership with Feeding America called the "Partnership for Hunger Relief." This month, under the partnership, seven refrigerated trucks containing Newman's Own food will be donated to food banks that serve struggling rural communities across the country. In November, 100 million pounds of food will have been distributed nationwide under the partnership. The "Partnership for Hunger Relief" enables nutritious food such as meat, dairy and produce to be delivered via refrigerated trucks to remote communities which are often underserved. The announcement was made today by Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America.This year marks the eighth consecutive year of the "Partnership for Hunger Relief." The 75 Ford trucks previously donated have traveled a combined total of 3.4 million miles and distributed over 97 million pounds of food -- equivalent to over 76 million meals -- to rural areas in need. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2009 Ford Flex and Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Milan as “Top Safety Picks.”
No other automaker has as many “Top Safety Pick” awards as Ford Motor Company, which tops the industry with 16.
The body structure on the automaker’s newest models features ultra high-strength boron steel in the B-pillar for added protection in side impacts.
DEARBORN, Sept. 25, 2008 – Ford Motor Company has earned more “Top Safety Pick” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) than any other automaker with a total of 16 to date.
Ford surpassed its closest rival Honda this week when four of its 2009 models – Ford Flex, Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKS and Mercury Milan – achieved “Top Safety Pick” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Flex, Ford’s all-new head-turning crossover, the new Lincoln MKS full-size flagship sedan and the Fusion and Milan midsize sedans build on the company’s safety leadership. Ford also has more 5-star government crash test ratings than any other automaker.
“Leading the industry in ‘Top Safety Picks’ is great news, because IIHS tests are some of the most demanding conducted outside of our own laboratories, and customers are increasingly relying on them when choosing a new vehicle,” said Susan Cischke, Ford’s group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering.
To earn IIHS’s “Top Safety Pick,” vehicles must earn the top “good” ratings in the institute’s high-speed front and side crash tests, and a rear crash test simulation that evaluates seat and head restraints. An added requirement since 2007 is that vehicles also must offer electronic stability control.
Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan excelled in each of the institute’s crash tests, and AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control is available for each vehicle. The safety system uses sensors to detect and measure yaw, or side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When AdvanceTrac® senses wheel slip, engine torque is reduced and braking is applied where needed to help the driver keep the car tracking on its intended path. IIHS has stated that “AdvanceTrac significantly reduces crash risk by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers.”
IIHS said “Top Safety Pick” vehicles are “at the head of the class for safety,” and recognizing them as such “helps consumers distinguish the best overall choices without having to sort through multiple test results.”
Structural Strength Is a Safety Fundamental
Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan get some of their core strength from the use of lightweight aluminum-coated boron steel – one of the strongest weld-able materials – in the body structure. The use of high-strength steel in the B-pillars is only part of their robust safety profile. Ford engineers also located the side door intrusion beams to help manage and absorb energy during side impact crashes.

In addition to electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes, standard safety features on Flex, MKS, Fusion and Milan include:
Six Standard Air Bags and Ford's Personal Safety System®: Safety features include six air bags (dual-stage driver and front-passenger air bags, thorax side air bags for front-seat occupants and side-impact air curtains), safety belt pretensioners, seat weight-sensing system for the front passenger seat and crash-severity sensing.

Combine Trips

Making lots of short trips means you’re driving with your engine cold. And that uses more fuel than making one long trip with an engine that’s warmed up. Try combining your short trips around town as much as possible to optimize your fuel economy.

Drive Sensibly

Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your miles per gallon (mpg) by up to 2%. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.

Avoid Excessive Idling

Idling gets 0 mpg. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines. If you know you’ll be stopped for a while, it’s actually better to turn off your engine instead of idling.

Use Cruise Control

Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas. Use Overdrive Gears When you use overdrive gearing, your car's engine speed goes down. This saves gas and reduces engine wear.

2009 Ford f-150 UNSURPASSED IN fuel economy, CAPABILITY

DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 18, 2008 – America’s best-selling pickup, the Ford F-Series, is raising the bar once again – this time with unsurpassed fuel efficiency on the new 2009 F-150, thanks to significant miles per gallon improvement across the entire F-150 lineup.

On sale in October, the new F-150 offers fuel economy that has improved an average of 8 percent across the entire lineup as a result of a wide-range of engineering enhancements. The fuel economy gains reach as high as 12 percent versus the prior model year on F-150 models equipped with the high-volume 3-valve, 5.4-liter V-8 engine. At the same time, the new F-150 delivers class-leading towing capability of 11,300 pounds and hauling capacity of 3,030 pounds – a combination no other competitor can match.

In addition, Ford is announcing the introduction of the new F-150 SFE “superior fuel economy” edition delivering up to 21 miles per gallon on the highway while still providing 7,500 pounds of towing capability – fuel economy that is unsurpassed in the full-size pickup segment.

“Ford has committed to have the best or equal to the best fuel economy with every new product we introduce, and we are delivering with the new F-150,” said Matt O’Leary, Ford F-150 chief engineer. “Fuel economy has moved from 10th to third place among pickup buyers’ top purchase considerations – right behind durability and value. The new F-150 delivers on all three as the industry leader.”

The new SFE package will be available on F-150 SuperCrew XL and XLT 4X2 vehicles with 4.6-liter, 3-valve V-8 engines and 5.5-foot beds. The SFE pickup will achieve 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway.

The SFE package trucks also feature a new fuel-efficient six-speed automatic transmission, a 3.15:1 rear axle and 18-inch chrome clad aluminum wheels with low rolling resistance P265/60R18 all-season tires.

“Earning the trust of so many truck customers during the past 31 years has taught us a lot about what they want and value from their F-150,” O’Leary said. “In the past, there was a tradeoff – more fuel economy meant less capability and vice versa. With the new F-150, we didn’t accept tradeoffs. We delivered capability and fuel economy.”

The SFE package will be a no-cost option on XLT SuperCrew pickups with the chrome package and will cost $1,095 when ordered on XL SuperCrew pickups with the decor package.

Fuel Economy throughout the Lineup
The 8 percent improvement in fuel economy across the entire lineup of V-8 F-150s is the result of using lightweight ultra-high-strength steel to lighten the truck up to 100 pounds versus the current model and aerodynamic refinements.

The new F-150 is now best-in-class for aerodynamics. The new F-150 SuperCrew 4X2 with a 5.5-foot box has the lowest coefficient of drag – 0.403 – in the segment. That’s 6 percent lower than a comparable 2008 F-150.

Key aero improvements for the new F-150 include:

· A new chamfered shape to the rear of the cab, which incorporated the center-high-mount stop lamp. This shape helps direct aerodynamic wake over the pickup box efficiently.
· The top of the tailgate, which angles outward to create a bold lip. This wider surface at the top of the tailgate works with the cab chamfering to direct airflow over the box efficiently.
· The front bumper valence and spoiler design, which has been improved to better manage airflow underneath the truck without compromising off-roading.

In addition, as part of the fuel economy improvements, Ford’s powertrain team delivered technology upgrades to make the F-150 powertrains more efficient.

The new six-speed automatic transmission offers a wider gear ratio span than four-speed transmissions, allowing engineers the flexibility to have responsiveness in low gears and better fuel economy in the taller gears. The new double-overdrive gearbox is designed to contribute a 4 to 6 percent fuel economy improvement.

Both the 5.4-liter and 4.6-liter 3-valve V-8 engines utilize open valve injection. This unique feature improves the air/fuel charge conditions in the combustion chamber, allowing greater spark advance at higher loads and engine speeds. This delivers increased horsepower during towing and higher rpm operations, lower emissions and more efficient use of fuel.

The F-150 also regulates gas consumption by using aggressive deceleration fuel shut-off. The fuel shut-off is automatic and requires no unusual actions from the driver. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the system temporarily turns off the fuel. The flow of fuel seamlessly resumes when the truck reaches a low speed or the driver accelerates again.

To prevent engine hesitation normally associated with fuel interruption, Ford’s powertrain team developed proprietary software to integrate the technology with the F-150’s powertrains.
